Leading Sydney recycler WSN Environmental Solutions plans to develop a facility in NSW to process plastic film, plastic bags and other post-consumer plastics and potentially divert 5,000 tonnes of flexible plastic from landfill each year. The project is supported by funding from the National Packaging Covenant (NPC).

Ken Kanofski, CEO of WSN Environmental Solutions says the new technology would reprocess plastic, extracted from household rubbish, in the existing mixed waste facility in South-West Sydney. This plant accepts the whole plastic bag of domestic waste from household rubbish bins and uses a flotation system to separate the waste streams.

He says, “The proposed plant has the potential to open up exciting new markets and reduce the manufacturing sector’s reliance on virgin materials. We are pleased that the NPC is supporting this project.”

The new facility is expected to extract methane from organic matter such as food waste and scraps and convert it to green energy for the NSW Energy Grid, while plastic is to be extracted and reprocessed for sale to manufacturers.

The proposed plastic recycling facility would clean the plastic, adding value to the end product and opening up new markets in Australia.

Ed Cordner, CEO of the NPC says the project is one of five the covenant recently approved funding for that will leverage more than $29m into recycling infrastructure and litter prevention in Australia.

Cordner says, “The new NPC projects have the capacity to divert a total of 130,000 tonnes of packaging waste from landfill which is an exciting time for Australia.”

I flew out of Madrid ten days before that disastrous Spanair takeoff late in August when more than 150 people died. Spain was the last port of call on a 26-day overseas trip that took in Scotland, France, Belgium and Spain. From a newspaper perspective, I saw few publications bigger than tabloid format, and many in a smaller format (generally about 260mm by 185mm)
